The drawing was inspired by a photograph of the frozen body of the Cheyenne chief, “Big Foot” taken the morning after the massacre and surrender of his tribe at Wounded Knee in 1891 by the remnants of Custer’s 7th Calvary unit. His frozen body seems to be in a state of spiritual reposal.
